Meet Lisa Donahey - Singer, Actress & Producer, November 24, 2020

<p>We had the good fortune of connecting with Lisa Donahey and we’ve shared our conversation below. </p>
<p><strong>Hi Lisa, what’s the most important lesson your business/career has taught you? </strong><br>To me, the most important thing in the music business is, ‘Adaptability’. When I say, Adaptability I’m talking about two things. Firstly, I have to keep up with new technology and be aware of new trends in the music industry. Secondly, for me, Adaptability means being able to sing different styles of music and being able to say, ‘Yes’, to a variety of different projects that involve music. It could be a demo recording, voice overs, studio sessions, voice coaching, producing live events, etc. I try and keep an open mind and a curiosity that allows me to learn about different facets of our ever-changing music business.</p>
<p><strong>Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work. </strong><br>Ever since I can remember, I’ve been singing. As a teen, I was in a performance troupe called, ‘Mickey Rooney’s Talent Towners.’ Mickey, himself, actually performed with the group on occasion. He sang and performed with us and served as a mentor to us. To be on stage and sing, with Mickey Rooney, was an amazing experience. Even in my teens, I knew that I was blessed to be able to learn from a legend. Those experiences, in that group, taught me the key tenets of performing, I still use many of those skills and lessons, I learned back then, today as an adult. After I graduated from high school, I auditioned and was selected to become a member of, an elite music program at Citrus College in Glendora, California. The group was called the, ‘Citrus Singers’. It was a music program, much like that of a conservatory, where students were trained in music theory, dancing, acting and the singing of various musical styles, from classical literature to pop music. We toured the world performing and singing and it was a formative experience. It was there, that I made the decision to pursue a career in music. After completing the three-year, Citrus Singers program, I applied to and earned a scholarship to go to school at Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA. Going to Berklee would be an unforgettable experience. There, I was immersed in music, 24/7. I was very fortunate to be part of a community of talented, supportive, student musicians. We all had the same things in common. It was a beautiful intentional community. We were there to learn, hone our craft and collaborate on projects. I was out of my comfort zone often and challenged myself to absorb as much as I could from my teachers and fellow students. My goal was to simply, always give it my best shot. It was also the place where I would meet many of the music professionals that I work with today. Even after graduating and going our separate ways, we always supported each other and partnered on projects whenever we could. To say that I am grateful for these relationships and friendships, is an understatement. After Berklee in Boston, I came back home to Los Angeles. I had big dreams of making a living in music, but I also knew that it would take time to develop relationships in the music business and find opportunities. It didn’t happen overnight. I had to get a regular job. I found myself working for the Walt Disney Company, in the area of marketing, for the better part of two and a half decades. Having a regular paycheck helped pay the bills. Getting to work in the field of ‘marketing’ also helped me learn and adopt various practices, that I have been able to apply to my, separate, music career. I have always said that, “I work a day job to fund my creative ventures!” So, you see, I’m a dreamer, but I’m practical, too. My career has been a slow and steady one. I have found great pleasure in exploring many different areas of the music industry. I’ve always known that there are lots of different ways to sing and make a living. To this day, I try and stay open to those opportunities. I do love performing live and the immediate connection, to the audience, that it provides. I have and do perform in industrials, stage shows and theatrical tours. I’ve been fortunate to be able to work for several different songwriters and composers, by singing on demos and also singing studio sessions for various film and television projects. I’ve been able to marry many of the other professional skills, I’ve acquired, like marketing, project management and communications to support my musical ventures. All of those tools came in handy when I self-produced three albums and I rely on them today when I produce shows and concerts. I have to say, that when I began to treat my singing career as a business, a lot of things changed. I went out and created my own production company, In Tempo Productions. The goal was to be able to take on creative projects and leverage the benefits of being a business owner. As the owner of a production company, I find myself being more focused on different ways to find projects, build and maintain relationships and generate work for myself and other musicians. It has also given me the opportunity to think about how I could be, of value, to the music community. I do this by hiring other musicians for events that I produce, by helping other musicians figure out their path and by making introductions, that help connect people, in the music industry. I’ve always felt, that there’s enough for everyone and choose not to dwell in scarcity. I know we live in a world that is impulsive. We want things to happen now. I have learned, over the years, that life doesn’t work that way. I find that if I go to a gig prepared, maintain a positive attitude, deliver what the client wants and am kind and respectful to everyone I meet along the way, that it pays dividends down the road. Every once in a while, I get a call for a gig from someone, who I have worked with years ago, who remembers that work ethic and hires me for those reasons alone. That work ethic and reputation, I’ve built over the years, also aligns with my “no jerk” policy. We spend a lot of time creating and using our talents on some cool projects and no one wants to work with someone difficult, or who is not a team player. I would have to say that my music career is all about saying, “yes.” I am always open to new opportunities. I can say “yes”, confidently, because I always put in the work. I train diligently and trust myself enough to know that I can do the job. If I ever get in a situation where I feel like I might be in over my head, I identify what it is that needs to be addressed. I, then, put in the time and work, so that I can deliver what the client wants. As I look back on my 30 years in the industry, I would just like people to know that there are so many different ways to share your talent. I think that when a person is being open minded and adaptable, that it can open them up to other opportunities and new relationships they never expected. I’ve enjoyed the diversity in my work and the relationships I’ve built and I look forward to the next 30 years.</p>
<p><strong>Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc. </strong><br>If we were not in the middle of a pandemic, SoCal has so much to offer for fun, food and entertainment. Plus, I love life and try to always pack 10 lbs. of fun in a 5 lb. bag! So, we’d have a full schedule. We’d start with breakfast a local greasy diner like the Tallyrand in Burbank. We’d, then, do a drive-by of the Brady House in Studio City (I love pop culture!). I’d then have to take then to the beach and head to Malibu. There’s something so calming about the beach. We could walk on the sand at Will Rogers Beach (I always have my fold up chairs in my trunk), and we’d sit on the sand and listen to and watch the waves for bit and crank some good music. And just breathe. I’m sure we’d be hungry after that and can go to Paradise Cove which is right on the beach in Malibu. Then, we could come back to the San Fernando Valley and nap if we needed to rest up a bit for a big night. For the evening, we could get dressed up catch some live music and Feinstein’s at Vitello’s or Catalina Jazz Club We could have dinner there and take in the talents of some fantastic musicians. I think we’d have to end the night at Coral Café in Burbank for a late night dessert and reflect on the day.</p>
<p>The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to? <br>I’d like to give a shout out to my voice teacher and friend, Crystal Barron at Crystal Voice Studios in Los Alamitos. She is an amazing person and so knowledgeable when it comes to the voice and guiding singers to discover the incredible potential of their own voice. Check her out at www.crystalvoicestudio.com.</p>

For Your Consideration-57th Annual Grammy's-TAKES ON BROADWAY
<p>Through your help and support, Lisa has been working on spreading the word about her new album, "Takes on Broadway" and this is her first year submitting music for GRAMMY® consideration. It is such a thrill to have the opportunity to do this and truly a dream ever since she was a little girl singing into her hairbrush. (Hey! You gotta start somewhere!) "Takes on Broadway", produced by Chris Gestrin (fellow Berklee grad), is entered in three categories this year. The album, as you may know, features fresh "takes" on and arrangements of Broadway favorites old and new and is receiving such a positive response thanks to all of you. "Takes on Broadway" is entered in the following categories: -Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album -Production/Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical -Composing/Arranging, Best Arrangement Instruments & Vocals - "Get Happy" Grammy voters will help widdle down the submissions in all the categories and no matter what happens, it is still a thrill for Lisa to have had this opportunity. Your continued support in spreading the word about her album is very much appreciated. Thanks for your support and sharing.</p>

Stage Scene LA - Review of "Songs for a New World"
<p>The delightful Donahey gets to perform Songs For A New World’s splashiest numbers, demonstrating terrific comedic skills and a soprano as smooth as silk. She’s the pissed-off wife in “Just One Step†and a frustrated, German-accented Mrs. Santa in “Surabaya Santa†(think Marlene Dietrich or Lotte Lenya in vamp mode). On a more serious note, she sings of a woman who chooses material possessions over “The Stars And The Moon,†and in “The Flagmaker, 1775,†of a young woman on the home front sewing “one more star†onto the colonial flag as she waits for her beloved’s return from the war.

Lisa in THE BLUNDERS World Premiere
<p>Come see Lisa Donahey as "Suzy" in the World Premiere of THE BLUNDERS!
A Musical Play set in the Upright Cabaret Lounge at the Vermont in Los Angeles.
Written & Directed by Jon Bernstein (screenwriter of Disney’s Meet the Robinsons)
Musical Direction by Mitchell Kaplan
THE BLUNDERS is about a group of friends who moved to L.A. to find fame and fortune, but found only obscurity and debt. Nothing is working out the way it was supposed to for Suzy, Ezra, Gretel and Chip.
They get fired from jobs they don’t like.
They lie to creditors while living off maxed-out credit cards.
They have mortifying Internet dates.
They attend AA meetings while drunk.
They steal self-help books from New Age bookstores. Love and success remain elusive.
They are groping for faith in an uncertain world.
Accomplices in one another’s delusions, they keep on hacking away and chasing the dreams they have no business dreaming in the first place. By society’s standards, they are losers.. But somehow they seem less like losers because they have each other.
A hilarious evening of environmental theatre where the audience is seated in the bar amidst the characters, and the story unfolds around them.

BACON-The Video!
<p>I wanted to share the latest phenomenon with you...
The United States has seen an increase in the popularity of bacon
dubbing it "Bacon Mania." Perhaps you've recently heard about a dish
called the "bacon explosion", tried sweet and salty candied bacon or
just crave a BLT every once in a while? Or maybe you've been a part
of a "bacon and beer tasting night" at a local restaurant or a
contestant in a bacon eating contest? While this idolatry seems crazy
(or like a heart-attack waiting to happen), you can't deny the fact
that people love bacon. Who knows? Maybe YOU are one of those people.
Hide no more closet bacon lovers! You are healed (or cured)! Be proud
because bacon is American!
To honor bacon, I've recorded a musical tribute to this yummy, crispy
goodness that you can find on my album "Lisa Donahey: She's Got It
Covered." You can pick it up on iTunes, CDBaby.com, Amazon or via
this link:
http://ats.lisadonahey.com/products.html
And to add even more sizzle, I've posted a visual homage to bacon on
YOUTUBE. Viva la Bacon! Check it out via this link:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xj65x63eihA
I encourage you to share the bacon love...one strip at a time!</p>

What satisfied fans are saying about Lisa's CD...
<p>"Great, great CD, Lisa! I've listened to it , oh, about a million times since I bought it last December. As much as I love your song selection, it's your voice that keeps bringing me back. What a thrill to listen to someone who can both belt like a Broadway star and yet also be as nuanced as a jazz artist. I believed every word; this vegetarian may even try bacon because of you!
Can't wait to hear what you do next..."
- Bethe (& Rick, too), Solana Beach, CA
"Your CD is amazing! It's a really great mix of diverse stuff that somehow all goes together as well. And of course your voice is tremendous. You're such a talent, Lisa - congrats on an incredible CD!"
- Brian, Los Angeles, CA
“I just love your album "She's Got It Covered." The arrangements and production are great, the musicians that played on it are first rate, and your vocals are stellar. I really enjoyed "Don't Shed A Tear", it just gets the whole album off to a great start. "Crazy He Calls Me" was moving and emotional, and it shows off your huge talents. "Route 66" was one of the best interpretations of this classic blues number that I've heard. But what really moved me was your sweet styling of "And So It Goes." This is an album I'll enjoy listening to over and over.
Lisa, you rock.â€

CD & Concert Info!!!
<p>Hello Everyone,
Happy Holidays! I hope you are all taking time to enjoy this holiday
season. I have so many things to be grateful for and am taking time
to stop and reflect on them this season. I am also very blessed to
be surrounded with family and friends throughout the year.
This year has been a year of personal and professional success,
change and an opportunity to try new things. It's always been a dream
of mine to cut an album (do they even call them album's anymore?) and
I got to fulfill that dream this past year. I accomplished this by
picking some great cover songs that I've always wanted to sing,
wrangled the best musicians I could find and, in the end, learned A
LOT about the making of an album. It was a fantastic journey!
My debut album "LISA DONAHEY: SHE'S GOT IT COVERED" will be available
the week of December 15. For whatever mood you're in, I think you
will enjoy it as I cover many great musical styles. It includes
everything from jazz to country, pop to r&b and I think you'll like
it.
You will be able to purchase the CD from me during December and I
will also have digital download cards for those who would rather have
digital files versus an actual CD. On December 25, it will be available through CDBaby.com. Visit the BUY link on my website to get yours today.
In mid-January, it will become available on iTune. I will send a reminder when that distribution channels is live. Thanks to everyone for your on-going
support!
Now for the part where you can play an active role and make a lot of
children in need very happy....I will be performing a Charity Concert
& CD Launch event in January 2009 and sharing the stage with 11 of the
finest musicians in town! There's no better way to celebrate with
friends and family then a party with live music, laughs and
libations! We will perform songs from my album, as well as tunes that
span the past 50 years covering all styles from country to jazz, 80's
to disco, theatre to rock! Here are the details:

Vote for LISA by August 10!
<p>Hi Everyone,
My favorite composer, Jason Robert Brown, is hosting a karaoke competition. One of the song choices is "I'm Not Afraid of Anything" from his show "Songs for a New World" and I have recorded vocals over his rehearsal piano track.
The person who can garner the most votes via email, wins. Wins what? I don't know really, I just like a challenge. I suppose just having your favorite composer hear you sing is winning enough.
Here's what I need you to do BEFORE Sunday, August 10.
Do it now so you don't forget!
1) Take a listen to the song located on my MUSIC tab on my website or through this youtube link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FpaWnrWJ7u0
2) When done listening, send an email to jrbkaraoke2008@yahoo.com (you can copy and paste this email address into the "TO" line if it's not an active link)
3) In the subject line, please type my name LISA DONAHEY (very important!) Voila! That's it.
Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Finalists will be picked after August 10 by JRB himself and they will advance to the next round.
I would so appreciate it if you would please forward this info onto any and all of your friends who'd like to support this crazy venture of mine!
P.S. I'll buy girl scout cookies, support jog-a-thons, plant a tree, and personally swiffer your entire house if you'd like me to. :-)</p>

CD Update!
<p>I am so excited for this new CD and can't wait for you to hear it. Since I am playing the role of production manager, administrative assistant, accounting exec and talent, needless to say I am learning a lot (and feel like Sybil!)!
Chris Gestrin is doing a fantastic job playing piano on, musical directing and mixing the tunes. I could not ask for a more talented person to be such a big part of this project. Chris is not only a fantastic award-winning musician in Canada, but also is an amazing producer and recording engineer. It's been fun doing this CD long distance. Chris has been sending me mixes via the internet to listen to and comment on. Producing this CD is my new addiction and is truly a labor of love.
I am asked frequently why did it take so long to record a CD? I think for many years I felt I had to focus on one genre of music. People aren't sure what to do with artists like me who can sing many styles. I love to sing it all and especially love a song with a great story to tell. This CD is going to be a reflection of all the wonderful music that has influenced my life and makes me, well, Me!
Stay tuned as there will be a Charity Concert/CD Launch Party coming this Fall in Los Angeles. Best, Lisa</p>

Lisa was back in the Studio!
<p>This past weekend I flew up to Vancouver to record cuts for my CD with the wildly talented Canadian musician and long-time friend, Chris Gestrin. We recorded 13 songs in Chris' studio. It was so much fun! The CD should be coming out this Fall and will be new interpretations and arrangements of covers old and new. I will keep you all posted.</p>

Disney VoluntEARS Event
<p>On May 20, I was asked to perform the song "Just One Dream" at Disney Worldwide Outreach's Annual VoluntEARS Award Show in Burbank. Over 600 VoluntEARS from around the company enjoyed the award ceremony hosted by James Denton from Desparate Housewives. It was a thrill to perform with a live band (who happened to be musically directed by my Berklee friend, Pathik Desai! He put a kick ass band together!) It was a thrill to sing for all The Walt Disney Company execs and was happy to be a part of the evening.
You can check out "Just One Dream" in my music section.</p>

<p>Film composer Karl Pruesser scored "Dragonlance: Dragons of Autumn Twilight" and brought me in to sing on the score. The Paramount Studios animated epic will be released on DVD on January 15th! 'Dragonlance' stars Kiefer Sutherland, Michael Rosenbaum, Michelle Trachtenberg, and Lucy Lawless.
A short video 'featurette' was made by Tracy Hickman (the original book's author), about the making of the music for 'Dragonlance'. It features footage and photos from the recording sessions and a 'sneak peek' at the film's Main Title! Here's a link...

2007 DCP EarWards!
<p>On Thursday, Dec. 13 I performed for the DCP EarWards, our annual celebration of the year's successes. It was held at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre in Hancock Park. I was fortunate enough to be able to again host the red carpet with my favorite funny man, Jim Babcock. For the show I got to sing, sing, sing and was in heaven! I sanf back up on the opening number "What Time is It?" from High School Musical, back up on Kelis and Taylor's rendition of Hannah Montana's "Nobody's Perfect", as well as sing a solo performing "Life is a Highway" from the Disney/Pixar movie Cars accompanied by Andy Mooney (DCP President), Al Pascua (IT and pianist extraordinaire), John Quinn (bad ass bassist), Tony Ringor (Graphic Artist & Guitar Guru) and Pat Torpey (drummer from Mr. Big & the Knack). It was such a fun show!</p>

Special Events, Voiceovers and Recordings, oh my!
<p>It's been a busy season already! I have been asked to host several Corporate Events and Award Ceremonies. Some with my comedic soul mate, Jim Babcock. Some I'll be hosting solo. I've also been able to work my voiceover chops recording voiceovers for Disney Home, Disney Stationery and a national radio campaign for a Disney/KB Home promotion. I just can't get enough of the session work! Disney has been good to me. I recorded a narration for a Cinderella pillow that has a sound chip imbedded in it that you can now find at Wal*Mart.
Last night I was in the studio with Pathik Desai, my Berklee friend and guitarist for Nick Lacey's touring band, recording one of my favorite songs, True Colors. It's uploaded in my MUSIC tab. Check it out!</p>

Lisa back in the studio in 2007!
<p>The imminence of a new year forces us to reflect on the past. It's a clean slate where anything is possible. It's an opportunity to try new things, to do things we've always wanted to do, and to make changes. This year I am going to do something I've always wanted to do. Make a CD of music I like to sing. Over the next few months I will be collaborating with some of the most talented musicians I know. So many of you inspire me as an artist and this will be a tribute to that inspiration and your constant support.
2007 is the year to find your "voice!" Don't miss or surpress your calling to do the things that you know are going to make a difference in the world.</p>
