FAQ’S

WHAT A VOICE COACH DOES:

My job as a voice coach is to be objective and to be an educated and experienced set of eyes and ears letting the student know if there is an issue with their vocal technique and performance and offering solutions. Singing is not easy, even for trained professionals. Learning to breathe correctly, posture, enunciation and vocal placement all take hard work, training and practice. I can help make you aware of areas where you can improve and provide solutions and new ways of approaching your singing and performing. Having the tools to sing and perform can also build your self-confidence and ability to be comfortable being in front of people. The skills you'll be learning are far reaching, even beyond singing and performing.  I want you to always be your best as a singer and performer and do it in a way where you are protecting your voice by helping you understand how your voice works, as well as being comfortable in your skin.

WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM VOICE COACHING:

Kids eight years old to adults can benefit from working with a voice coach. Whether you are a singer/performer or someone who speaks regularly in front of people, I want to know what your goals are and any vocal issues you’re dealing with, so I can help you reach your full singing and performing potential.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I TAKE A LESSON?

Like any craft you are trying to excel in, working on improving your singing voice and range does not happen over night. It is a process. In order to see results, it is recommended you study once a week in order to keep the momentum of your learning and vocal growth. The voice is a muscle and it needs to be worked and trained regularly like any other muscle in your body.

WHAT TO EXPECT IN A VOICE COACHING SESSION:

In a voice coaching lesson we will review vocal health and top line technique, work on developing your best self as a singer and performer in a positive and stress-free environment.

In a typical voice coaching lesson, we will start with light stretching, getting connected to the breath, and simply getting our body in “check” since singing is a physical activity. Think of yourself as an athlete warming up for a race. That's what smart singers who care about their instrument do-they warm up and prepare.

We will then run vocal scales and exercises, so I can better understand your vocal range and the nuances of your voice addressing any areas posing challenges, as well as potential areas for growth. We want to get your voice into a healthy place and routine where you can sing freely without tightness or tension. (It’s hard enough to perform a song when you feel stressed wondering if the sounds are going to come out and sound right).

The lesson will end with us working on a song of your choice singing to a backing track that you will bring on CD or as an mp3.

Each lesson, we can continue to strengthen your voice and build your self confidence so you are ready for your moment to shine.

COMMITMENT:

MATERIALS - For most lessons, students are responsible for bringing their own backing tracks for the songs they’d like to work on CD or as an mP3 on their smart phone or an iPod.  Adaptor cords, amp/speaker and microphone will be provided.

PRACTICING - The work won't stop in the lesson. Like anything you want to get good at, you will need to work on the exercises given to you in your lesson throughout the week to continue to strengthen and improve your vocal technique and singing.

ATTENDANCE - Students are responsible for their time slot. Lisa Donahey offers flexible lesson times for all students and families. However, if a student who is a minor is not available for their weekly lesson for any reason it is the parent’s responsibility to notify the voice coach at least seven business days in advance to reschedule accordingly. A credit will not be issued for the missed lesson.
